LARA AUTOCENTRE · VEHICLE REPAIRS

Gearbox repairs at Lara AutoCentre

A gearbox noise, leak or shifting problem can come from several parts of the drivetrain. Lara AutoCentre assesses the symptoms and explains whether the next step is servicing, a related component repair or more extensive gearbox work.

Serving drivers around Waltham Cross and Tring, including surrounding Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire communities. Waltham Cross is open now; Tring opens 14 October 2026.

When to contact us

  • Difficult or inconsistent gear selection
  • Unusual drivetrain noises
  • Fluid leaks around the transmission
  • A gearbox warning or a change in shifting behaviour

How we assess the problem

We start with the vehicle registration, gearbox type and a description of when the fault occurs. Checks are selected for the transmission and symptoms, including related clutch, mounting or control concerns where relevant. We do not assume that a warning or noise identifies an internal gearbox failure.

What the work may involve

The repair route depends on the findings and the type of transmission. We discuss component repairs, further investigation and any specialist work needed before agreeing the scope. If a service is more appropriate, our gearbox servicing page explains that separate service.

Please tell us if the vehicle cannot select a gear or move normally. Avoid forcing gear selection or continuing to drive with a serious fault; contact us to discuss assessment and collection availability.

Will a gearbox service fix a shifting fault?

Not necessarily. Maintenance and fault repair are different jobs. We assess the symptoms first and explain whether servicing is appropriate or whether further diagnosis or repair is needed.

Gearbox fault diagnosis and repair

Gearbox Repair Services

Delayed engagement, harsh shifts, slipping, noise or transmission warnings need diagnosis before a repair route is chosen. We assess the evidence and distinguish servicing needs from electrical, hydraulic and mechanical faults.

Why correct diagnosis and procedure matter

Gearbox behaviour depends on fluid condition and level, adaptation values, sensors and wiring, hydraulic pressure, valve-body operation, clutches and internal mechanical components. A fluid service can be important maintenance, but it is not a cure for every transmission fault.

Vehicle-specific identification

We assess automatic, dual-clutch and manual gearbox concerns at vehicle level, using the exact transmission identification, fault data, fluid evidence and road-test behaviour to plan the next step.

Evidence before parts

We confirm the symptoms and relevant test results so the quote reflects the vehicle rather than a generic parts list.

Clear authorisation

We explain what is included and agree any change in scope before additional work is carried out.

When to ask us

Symptoms and situations we investigate

  • Delayed engagement, slipping or flare between gears
  • Harsh, clunky or inconsistent gear changes
  • Transmission warnings, limp mode or stored gearbox faults
  • Noise, vibration or a suspected gearbox fluid leak

Driving with severe slipping, loss of drive, a major leak or abnormal noise can increase internal damage. Stop when safe and contact us before continuing the journey.

Repair scope

What the work can include

  • Identify the exact gearbox and record symptoms and fault data
  • Check fluid evidence, leaks, wiring and road-test behaviour where safe
  • Assess whether the cause is service-related, electronic, hydraulic or mechanical
  • Explain the repair, specialist overhaul or replacement route before commitment
